The School |
Kammanassie Care is a community run project with the aim off enabling and improving the education and health care off children in the Kammanassie Valley in South Africa. The valley is set in a stunning part of South Africa with rolling hills, green valleys and majestic mountains. This is a small project run by a few farmers in the area with the purpose off enabling these kids to a secondary education. The farm workers off the area are very poor with very limited if any disposable funds, thus the education of kids is not a high priority. With the lack of education the children join the same cycle as their parents, and working as farm hands is their best opportunity in life.
The aim of Kammanassie Care is to break this cycle. They have a small primary school, where kids are given a primary education, taught about health care (including HIV awareness), the environment and also to prepare them for secondary school. The second part of the project is to enable these kids to go to secondary school. This is done mostly through funds raised, and people sponsoring children through high school. The families are not able to pay for their kids to go to secondary school, and most of the time they are encouraged to leave school and start working. The aim of Kammanassie Care is to not only acquire funds to enable these kids to go to secondary school, but to prepare them for the whole experience. This includes food, clothes, school supplies, moral support, boarding, mentor program and organising government funding where possible. The beauty off the project is that every child who finishes high school not only improves their own life, but they also lift up their families and community.
I think this is as good as it gets. It is run purely for the kids, and these are kids with very few opportunities in life. Without it they have very limited to no future prospects. This is not a big project with huge administration costs. Every cent goes into helping these kids. It is very close to my heart. I believe an education is the best way to help people to a better life. It is not a quick fix, but it leads to long lasting change.
At the moment they have about 70 kids in junior school, and 11 being sponsored in high school. To enable a child to go to high school only costs R3500 (about 320 pounds) a year. This includes all school fees, clothing, boarding, school supplies etc. Some of these kids don’t even have basics like underwear and bedding when they go to secondary school. This is all supplied to them. I believe it is very little to help one person to a better life.
The BIG plan:
To try and raise some funds for Kammanassie Care. It would be phenomenal if we can raise enough to help a few kids through high school. Two clever girls recently had to leave high school due to lack of funds, it would be great if we can get them back into high school.
How to donate or help:
Like I said before this is not a big project, but community based and has only been running for a few years. It is not an official NGO. There are no big websites or loads of administrators. It is basic and efficient. To donate you can do it through the paypal button, or directly into their bank account. If you have any queries about the project or would like more info, or (even better) would like to sponsor a child please contact Anel Burger (email - anel.burger@gmail.com or phone - 0027795728843). Anyone is more than welcome to visit or help if they are in the area. You can then see what your donation is used for.
Lastly anyone with some free time is more than welcome to donate some 'man power' to the project, again just contact Anel.

Wonderful, wonderful project! Is it possible to send us a map of where Kamanassie is?
ReplyDeleteHoffie Snr
If you type these coordinates into google maps it will show you the exact location of the school where many of these kids go. The google map opens on Route R62 byt just zoom out a bit and you will see a green arrow pointing to the school.
ReplyDelete-33.721252,22.816951 (the coordinates) :)
ReplyDeleteHenri dude it's all great full marks on your planning and this blog..... Wish I could do this...
ReplyDeleteWe will be following your progress with great interest and will definitely be part of the Kammanassie Project.
ReplyDeleteWe are farmers in the area and live near Jan and Anel. It is a very worthy project. We have been deeply saddened to see how few children even finish primary school here. If you can help to change that you will have achieved wonders!
More power to your bike and courage to you!
